Production Notes

The 2000 Maliziosa is a white wine inspired by the wines of Italy’s Friuli region. It is primarily Tocai Friulano, the major grape of Friuli, and is produced in minute quantities in the United States. Our Maliziosa is the first Tocai Friulano produced in Oregon. The cuttings came from the Bien Nacido vineyard in California and were grafted onto three acres of vines at the Croft-Bailly vineyard located just SW of Monmouth, Oregon.

The grapes were whole cluster pressed and fermented in a stainless steel tank. After lees aging for seven months, the wine was blended with two barrels of Chardonnay from Shea Vineyard and bottled in June, 2001. The Chardonnay was added to add textural complexity and length to the finish. We limited the Chardonnay portion to 20% as more detracted form the lovely Tocai fruit character. The Maliziosa is 100% malolactic and has a residual sugar of 0.4%.

Bottled July 2001

This wine was concieved as a fun wine and is meant to accompany appetizers or be drunk with friends. It has the richness to pair with shell fish, tacos, grilled chicken, and other beer-friendly foods.

Winemaker's Notes

Maly what??? Ma LEETS ee o sah.

Here is the short story: Hungary and Italy make different wines from different grapes, but both are called Tocai. They sue each other in World Court. Italy loses. I make a wine from the Italian version, but I am half-Hungarian and half-Italian and want to avoid schizophrenia, so I come up with a new name.

Maliziosa is an Italian word selected by Aldo Vacco, the director of Pruduttori del Barbaresco, and a good friend. In Aldo’s words, “ Maliziosa is said of a young girl with the certain look in her eyes you feel she is not as innocent as her age and fresh beauty may say”. St. Innocent has it’s first ‘not so innocent’.

This is a lovely white table wine. More fruit and complexity than sauvignon blanc. No wood. No pretense and a great label. Use it for parties, or drink it for fun. Only eight bucks a bottle by the case.
